Hello Veg club members,

We are thrilled to announce that our community has reached 50 members this week! We have exciting events coming up, including cooking workshops, restaurant visits and the Veg Club Fall Social.

Restaurant Spotlight: Ground Control

Get outside of the Loop bubble and explore this Logan Square vegetarian restaurant! The menu is full of creative brunch, lunch, and dinner items such as vegan Gravy N Biscuits and a Blackened Tofu Po Boy. This casual, hipster vibe is perfect for veg and non-veg friends alike.

Recipe of the Week:

This Red Lentil Pumpkin Soup is easy, filling, and perfect for the Fall season. It is full of healthy nutrients, has minimal ingredients, and only requires 10 minutes of prep time!

Animal Industry:

Under this topic we’ll introduce common practices in the animal industry. We will refrain from using explicit postage, instead we will post animated explanatory videos or articles about common practices. This week’s topic – the milk industry. Video.

Nutrition, Health and Environment:

Nutrition

Following previous week’s topic on the building blocks of nutrition, this week we’ll share a short guide on how to get those in your plate. The following article, published on “physicians committee for responsible medicine”, provides a great overview of plant based nutrients.

Health

 An interesting read about the link between diet and chronic diseases is the book “The China Study”. The book is based on one of the largest nutritional studies ever conducted, with over 6,500 participants from across China. Since the book is 417 pages long, here is a short summary

Environment

Did you know that oceans are the sources of 80% of the earth’s oxygen? The following short documentary describes the devastating effects of fishing on the marine environment. link (0:55-6:00).
