It was great seeing most of you at our fall social! We have other exciting events lined up for you, so make sure you sign up. If you are interested in hosting a small group cooking class in your apartment or have other event ideas, please send us an email.

Restaurant Spotlight: Native Foods Café

Searching for veg friendly replacements of your classic comfort foods? Look no further than Native Foods Café! With several locations throughout Chicago including Hyde Park and the Loop, this fast casual restaurant features healthy and indulgent items alike, including the Meatball Sub and the Sesame Kale Macro bowl. You would never be able to tell that everything is plant based and vegan!

Recipe of the Week:

In case you missed our Fall Social, this Creamy White Bean and Tomato Soup was featured as a perfect Fall starter or meal.  It’s packed with veggies and will leave you full and satisfied.  The simple ingredient list makes this recipe a winner!

Animal Industry:

Melany Joy, a professor of psychology and sociology at the University of Massachusetts, coined the term Carnism, the invisible belief system that conditions us to eat certain animal. In the following video (18 min), she discusses her research on that topic.

Nutrition

So where do you get your protein? Protein is actually very easy to get from plant sources. In fact, the standard diet has too much protein in it and protein excess is much more common than protein deficiency. Here is a quick explanation about the protein fiasco by Dr. Michael Greger (5 min).

Plant based protein sources (Daily requirement: ~0.85 gram for every Kilogram of body weight).

Health

What is the best way to prevent Diabetes, Cancer and other chronic diseases? Who benefits most from a sick population? And how is the government involved in this process? The Movie What the Health is a great resource to start answering those questions. Trailer.

Environment
