MORNING SESSION CHOICE DESCRIPTIONS:

Get them, Empower them, Keep them: How to Hire and Manage Great Talent in the Education Industry
Great people are the lifeblood of any high-performing organization.  Empowering them with clarity, skills, and the freedom to innovate is a sure way to get excellent results.  In this session, Tyson Kane, Head of Schools for Chicago's Noble Network, will discuss how to recruit, hire, manage, and empower excellent talent.  Clarifying your own style and your organization's identity are key in the recruitment process.  Hiring well involves being both thorough and self-disciplined in the steps and measures you take.  Great management means empowering your people to achieve the potential they already possess.  Communicate the vision, create foundational expectations and performance measures, hold people accountable, and then get out of their way!

Turning around Management Challenges: Supporting Struggling Staff Members
Join University of Chicago Post-Doctoral Scholar Nadav Klein for an exploration of “Set-Up-To-Fail” Syndrome. Learn how great managers prevent management challenges and turn them around when they do happen. Participants will reflect on their own management approach and have the opportunity to practice performance management conversations in a school context.

Implementing for Success: How to Turn Ideas into Reality
Great ideas can only go so far without great implementation, and so this workshop will focus on how to implement new initiatives so they take root. Through panel discussions and case studies, participants will learn about methods and considerations for identifying stakeholders, planning communication, and buy-in. Participants will also leave with a set of simple but effective project planning and project management tools they can use to guide their work.

AFTERNOON SESSION CHOICE DESCRIPTIONS:

School Finance: Values and Priorities Aligned Resource Allocation
Join veteran school leader Katie Kirley for this workshop focused on building the skills of effective school based resource allocation in alignment with a school’s values and priorities.  Participants will walk away empowered to be the driver of school budget decisions while developing the ability to make practical and strategic decisions that leverage real and financial resources to improve student outcomes.  We will analyze case studies of real school budgets, investigate research on the effects of allocation strategies, and articulate next steps for shifting budgets to reflect values and strategic priorities.

Marketing for School Choice: Messaging that Sticks with Stakeholders
Join University of Chicago Assistant Professor of Economics Professor Seth Zimmerman in exploring the factors that influence families’ school choice decisions. After developing an understanding of stakeholders’ motivations, participants will apply best practices in creating marketing messages that stick and learn from education veterans how to best get that message out to communities.

SESSION CLOSED: Design Thinking Methods for Innovative Problem Solving

Great schools need great ideas, which requires great teams and great brainstorming. This session will explore ways to brainstorm and prioritize creative yet practical solutions to big problems in schools. Design thinking experts, including Professor Jeremy Alexis of IIT’s Institute of Design, will lead you through a series of exercises that could be implemented in school meetings and professional development sessions, to support staff in collaboratively and effectively generating potential solutions. Participants will leave with new tools for honing in on solutions and building a more open-minded and collaborative team culture in the process.
