Professor Liz Moyer of UChicago's Department of Geophysical Sciences will visit Booth to discuss the technologies by which humans currently appropriate energy for industrial and societal use. She'll cover everything from steam turbines, to internal combustion engines, to photovoltaics, and will touch on possible pathways for the future. The talk will include a high-level review of the physics and economics of the human energy system, and a demonstration of back-of-the-envelope techniques for analyzing various options.
As you might imagine, Liz could talk about this stuff for a while, so this event will be a bit longer than most LnLs. It will start *promptly* at 11:45am and continue until 1pm, with at least 15 minutes for questions.

Liz Moyer
Liz Moyer is an Associate Professor in the University of Chicago's Department of Geophysical Sciences. She specializes in Atmospheric Science.
Her research interests fall in two main threads. The first includes the use of the isotopic composition of atmospheric water vapor as a tracer of convective processes, cirrus formation, and stratosphere-troposphere exchange; and the design of spectroscopic techniques for in-situ trace gas measurements. The second includes climate (and human) response to greenhouse-gas forcing; development of tools for impacts assessment; statistical emulation of climate model output; and climate and energy policy evaluation.
