Navigating the Grey ("NTG") is an annual student-led ethics conference at Chicago Booth, born out of the Great Recession in recognition of our responsibilities as future leaders. Every year, we invite prominent representatives of the private and social sectors so that they can share with us pivotal moments in their lives, and the principles which underline their ability to lead with integrity and impact. This year's conference theme is 'Enduring Foundations: Thriving in Times of Uncertainty to create more positive social impact in our lives, careers and communities.

Our goal is to inspire audience members to define their own compass of values, and think consciously about how we will live out those values in the face of inevitable "grey areas" in our personal and professional lives. How will we not just survive these grey areas, but thrive in them?

Our speaker, Mark McClain is the Founder and CEO of SailPoint, a $6B leading identity management company. While continuing to lead SailPoint into the future, Mark shares this people-first cultural ethic with all types of leaders in the hopes of improving how we implement corporate culture and bring startup culture back from the brink.

Mark spent his early career in sales and marketing roles at IBM and HP. After that engagement, Mark co-founded Waveset, eventually selling to Sun Microsystems in 2003. From there, Mark and his team formed SailPoint, the market's dominant player in identity governance services. While his career has taken him to many places and afforded him even more experience, a few core priorities stayed true for Mark and his team throughout: innovation, integrity, impact, and individuals.

Troubled by the false-front of today's startup culture that attempts to sell ping-pong tables and a beer fridge as organizational culture, Mark is on a mission to change the way companies prioritize values and their people.

If you've ever wondered what it takes to take your startup idea to the next level, selling to private equity or going public, (a few billion dollars), and how to build a strong culture as you scale we look forward to having you!
