E/W BCSC Presents: Is sunlight the best disinfectant? What to expect from sustainability disclosures and sustainable finance

Sustainability and ESG reporting have moved from a specialized concern to an increasingly important part of how businesses communicate performance, risk, and long-term strategy. In this talk, Professor Leuz will examine why these disclosures have gained prominence, what we can expect from mandatory reporting and greater transparency, and how useful this information is to businesses, investors, policymakers, and the public. The discussion will also highlight the importance of externalities: impacts on communities, the environment, and the broader economy that may not be fully reflected in financial statements. The talk will also explore the political dimensions of ESG and climate disclosure rules, including bipartisanship, polarization, and shifts across administrations.
