Hello Booth!
Let's start with the basics: humans use a lot of Energy. Much of that energy comes from fossil fuels. Many people are concerned about this, calling our energy use "unsustainable." Some have recommended dramatic increases in energy efficiency, or dramatic reductions in the use of fossil fuels.
That sounds reasonable, but these are big decisions! Lots of people will be affected, and lots of money would need to be spent. Have you ever wondered, "what are the facts? What options are feasible?" If so, Chicagonomics and the Booth Energy Group have you covered.
Join us for lunch on Wednesday February 8th (we're buying), where Professor Liz Moyer of UChicago's Department of Geophysical Sciences will visit Booth to discuss the technologies by which humans currently appropriate energy for industrial and societal use. She'll cover everything from steam turbines, to internal combustion engines, to photovoltaics, and some possible pathways for the future. The talk will include a high-level review of the physics and economics of the human energy system, and a demonstration of back-of-the-envelope techniques for analyzing various options.
As you might imagine, Liz could talk about this stuff for a while, so this event will be a bit longer than most LnLs. It will start *promptly* at 11:45am and continue until 1pm, with at least 15 minutes for questions.
