In contrast to the global slowdown, India has grown at 7.6% in FY16, and witnessed some significant macroeconomic and policy changes in the past few years. PE VC in India as an asset class has evolved significantly over the past two decades. Despite the exponentially growing PE VC investments in India and the efficiency trends coming along with it, are there any hidden loopholes indicating a bubble?


Managing Director, ChrysCapital

  • Mr. Gaurav Ahuja is a Managing Director at ChrysCapital. He joined the firm in August 2004 and previously served as a Director at the firm. Mr. Ahuja left in July 2005 to pursue his M.B.A. at INSEAD and rejoined the firm in July 2006. Previously, he served in the mergers and acquisitions group at Lazard Freres and Merrill Lynch. Mr. Ahuja received a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce and Economics from University of Virginia.

  • Mr. Rajesh R. Pai, serves as Managing Director at Global Environment Fund (GEF). Previously, Mr. Pai was a Managing Director at CID Capital Inc. Mr. Pai has over 18 years of professional experience spanning entrepreneurial, operational, and investing experience across all stages of businesses. Mr. Pai received an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago, a Master of Computer Science from Arizona State University, and a B.S. degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Bombay

  • Mr. Kurien serves as an Independent Consultant and Member of The Strategic Advisory Board of L Capital, Asia. Mr. Kurien has been associated with Marquee brands in the fast moving consumer products, consumer durables and retail industry in India for over 33 years with companies viz. Reliance Retail Limited, Titan Industries Limited and Hindustan Unilever Limited. He is Chairman of FICCI National Retail Committee, Member of Advisory Council of the Retailer Association of India (RAI) and National Retail committee of CII. He earned B.Sc. from St. Joseph’s College and a MBA from XIM, Jamshedpur.

Ira Weiss

Clinical Professor of Accounting and Entrepreneurship, University of Chicago Booth School of Business

  • Ira Weiss specializes in tax strategy, financial accounting, mutual fund taxation, and private equity investing. He teaches advanced MBA courses in both tax strategy and entrepreneurship at Chicago Booth, and helps support the entrepreneurial community through his work as the Faculty Director of Hyde Park Angels, an angel investing group affiliated with the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship.
  • Weiss has been the recipient of numerous teaching awards, and his research has appeared in the Wall Street Journal and on CNN, as well as in the Journal of Accounting and Economics and Review of Accounting Studies.
  • Weiss feels it is important for students in his tax class to walk away knowing how to structure business decisions in the most tax-efficient manner, taking into account all other costs. He cites one significant use for the tools he teaches in class: learning how to structure merger and acquisition transactions. Students also learn many useful tax planning techniques for their personal financial decisions, such as whether they can deduct the cost of MBA tuition off their taxes. While teaching taxes and business strategy, he often is able to include some of the structures from real private equity deals to demonstrate the power of effective tax planning.
  • Weiss has held positions at the accounting/consulting firms of Ernst & Young and Coopers & Lybrand, and serves on the boards of Concerro and Retel Technologies.
  • He earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Illinois in 1992. He received an MBA in 1999 and a PhD in 2001, from the Chicago Booth. He holds a CPA from the state of Illinois.
  • Outside of the classroom, he enjoys college basketball, mountain biking, Middle East politics and religions, and neuro-linguistic programming.
