The Hyde Park-Kenwood Food Pantry, a member agency of the Greater Chicago Food Depository, serves an average of 100 households per week. They have a loyal client base of neighbors who come each week, others every few weeks, and, each week, some guests who find them for the first time. We will be joining their loyal group of continuing volunteers for their Saturday shift, which runs from 9:30 am until 1:30 pm. Duties include carrying cases of food and packed bags (roughly 10-20 pounds, more or less, but there are jobs that can avoid the lifting), including up and down stairs, packing bags to order, refilling stock, bringing orders outside to clients’ carts or cars, recycling boxes, as well as greeting clients, keeping a list of those who have arrived, taking orders, and also some other more paperwork type tasks, etc. The Pantry is committed to a “client choice” model, such that each guest goes through their “grocery store” with an “ambassador” who makes sure their order is kept together as each client chooses from the weekly menu of fresh fruit and vegetables, frozen meats/fish, dry goods (cereal, beans, bread, peanut butter, pasta, etc) and canned fruits, vegetables and beans, and other miscellaneous items. It is really important to them that each guest who comes is treated graciously by name and feels respected and that they do all they can to get them the food they most want and need for their families. We'll meet at Gleacher at 8:45 am, eat some bagels together, and then carpool down to the Church for the shift. **If you have an afternoon class but are still interested in helping out, let me know and we may be able to accommodate by having a one of the cars of students leave a little early.
