Join SAC Philanthropy and the Corporate Sustainability Club for a joint event to kick off Earth Week! We will be joining Shedd Aquarium staff and other volunteers to help with a beach cleanup at 63rd Street Beach. We will be given bags, gloves, and a litter monitoring form for the cleanup, which will last about an hour. We will finish the beach clean-up by tallying up our litter totals and submitting the forms, which Shedd staff will enter into a database of materials found in clean-ups across the Great Lakes that is used to inform decisions for policy and effective coastal management. In addition to the beach clean-up, we may also be able to help with habitat restoration by hand pulling and bagging invasive plant species, such as sweet clover and horseweed, or seed collecting. We will meet at Gleacher at 9:15 am to carpool down to 63rd Street Beach, the cleanup starts at 10 am. Feel free to email or slack Diana with any questions, dsanborn@chicagobooth.edu. Arboles de la Vida are a sculpture style commonly created in the central region of Mexico. They are most commonly, functionally speaking, candleholders. However, this artesanía is usually extremely detailed and astonishingly intricate. During the colonial period they were commonly intended as tools for educating people using biblical iconography, frequently to showcase the story of creation. Today, we frequently see artesanos use the platform as an opportunity to share a wide array of narratives, such as historical events, biblical stories, and depictions of the afterlife. In recent years we have seen some artisans take a more contemporary approach and autobiographical depictions. Participants will use a base inspired by the shape of Arboles de la Vida, then, using air dry clay, and coloring tools, they will explore symbolism that represents them, their family, or their history.
